Musical Montage

When I was in seventh grade, the only thing I wanted for Christmas was a CD player/boombox. Sixth grade had been the year of the coveted I.O.U. sweatshirts... Seventh grade, however, I needed a CD player. Everybody else had one and my life would probably end if "Santa" didn't deliver.

Santa did deliver, though. I got my CD player. Santa apparently also spoke to my Aunt Janette, who sent me my very first CD's.
  1. Mariah Carey's Unplugged
  2. Toad the Wet Sprocket Walk on the Ocean single
  3. Gloria Estefan's Greatest Hits

I listened to those three CD's over and over and over, until I saved enough money to buy myself a CD: Blind Melon's CD, featuring No Rain.

God, life was good.

I still can sing all the words to Gloria Estefan's Rythym is Gonna Get You and Aunt J is the only reason I know that Mariah Carey's version of I'll Be There was originally done by the Jackson 5. I heard that Toad the Wet Sprocket song on the radio yesterday, which is what reminded me of the first CD's I ever owned.

Do you think the music that a person owns says a lot about that person? I'm not sure what this says about me...

Happy, happy birthday to my love, Dave... He's the greatest person in my life and I can't wait to spend the rest of our birthdays together! 'Appy Bert-day, dere, ah, Bab... Oh, I mean, uh, Dave!

Thanks baby... love you too.

Oh, and I want to divulge some more info on here - Vi knows all the words to "Opposites Attract" by Paula Abdul.

Happy B/day Dave....to generationally date myself...my first player was for 45's. It would hold a stack of 5 and drop them automatically when one was done. It was the coolest thing going. Wasn't bigger than a shoe box and had one speaker....and plugged in only. I do think music mirrors a person...I like GE, MC but have never heard Toad.

So pleased to report, whenever this icebreaker comes up, that the first album I saved up my own money for was Sgt Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club band. This does not say anything accurate about my hippness. It says that I had just seen Yellow Submarine, and had discovered the Beatles... 2 years after they had broken up. And I liked the cover, which now has little value because I actually cut the cardboard buttons out of it and wore them. I am really sorry I disclosed this much.
Happy weekend, Vi and Dave.

I do think music reveals a lot about the person. My first record purchase (yes, vinyl) was J. Geil's Band's Freeze Frame, with that Mr. Potato Head on it. I later traded it for a bunch of 45s, Ozzy Osbourne's Crazy Train among them. Yep, my musical tastes have been alllllllll mixed up from square one.

My first record purchase...a 45...was "Band On The Run" by Paul McCartney and Wings when I was about 9 or 10.

Not the first one I owned, though. I had lots of records passed down to me from my older brothers. I was the only third grader around who was into Pink Floyd and Alice Cooper.
